Introduction to the Latter-day Hymns Series

We have been told by the Lord that “the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me” and that it will be answered upon the heads of those who perform the music. We are also told that we draw closer to God through music than through any other means save it be for prayer. Music is a powerful tool, one that can be used to bring us near to the throne of God or one that can be used to drive us away from the Holy Ghost. My great-great-grandmother was converted to the Gospel by the power of the … Continue reading

Christmas Music

It seems as though music and Christmas go hand in hand. There are so many beautiful Christmas hymns that are about the Savior’s birth. It is important to incorporate these hymns into the traditions that you do as a family. Even if you are not musically talented (as I am not), you can enjoy these wonderful songs throughout the Christmas season. It seems that with commercialization of the Christmas season that it is becoming more difficult to find the religious Christmas songs, as you listen to the radio or complete your holiday shopping. You can bring the focus back at … Continue reading

RS/EQ: “The Nourishing Power of Hymns” by Jay E. Jensen

Part of the Relief Society/Priesthood lesson curriculum each month is based on one of the conference talks. Our teacher chose “The Nourishing Power of Hymns” by Jay E. Jensen for our class this last week. Miriam already did a great review of this talk, so I thought I’d share the ways in which the lesson was presented to our specific Relief Society. Our teacher began by sharing her personal testimony of the power of music in our lives and the times when she herself felt down and was uplifted by a touching piece of music. She then asked us to … Continue reading

Children’s Voices – Oh, How Sweet

A week ago my daughter had the opportunity to participate in a senior Primary children’s choir for Stake Conference. They had two practices beforehand and were asked to bring only scriptures and paper with them to sit on the stand – no toys. They would be up there for two full hours, during which time they were asked to be very reverent, and it was expected that they not leave the stand at all. I was very curious to see how it would turn out. Every single child there behaved like a little angel the whole time. I saw no … Continue reading

The Sabbath Day

We have been commanded to set aside the Sabbath day as a day of rest. It is a day to worship the Lord and remember all the things that He has given to us. It is a day to take the time to be together with your family. It is a day to contemplate and consider the many aspects of the gospel. Are there some Sundays when you start the day more tired than you began it? Do you struggle with the ways to help your children keep the Sabbath Day holy? Do you feel like you spend the entire … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Music and Worship

This week you could have family home evening based on music. If you have teenagers, they can pass off goals in both the Personal Progress and Duty to God awards that involve music. This family home evening can take place at the beginning of the goal process or at the end or you may want to have a similar lesson after they have reached their goals. You can open family home evening by reading Doctrine and Covenants 25:12. As a family you can talk about how some music helps you think about Heavenly Father, and how some music can reflect … Continue reading
