For the Strength of Youth Series: Family

The opening statement in the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet on Family states that “being part of a family is a great blessing.” Some of the benefits listed for being part of a family include companionship and happiness, a loving atmosphere, and a place of preparation for eternal life. Family is one of my most amazing blessings in life. I am amazed at how much I have learned and continue to learn from my family. I have four sisters and two brothers along with fabulous parents who have all taught me valuable lessons throughout the years. And they’ve become … Continue reading

For the Strength of Youth Series: Gratitude

This section of the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet is one of the shortest, but oh what a difference it makes in your life! Many of us have heard President Monson talk about an “attitude of gratitude” and how it will make our lives seem happier and more bountiful. This section of the pamphlet also has a parable attached to teach the principle. The parable of the ten lepers (found in Luke 17:12-19) illustrates this standard beautifully. In this parable, Christ encounters ten lepers, who beg him to heal them. He takes mercy on them, and sends them to … Continue reading

Finding Gratitude

Christmas is one of the most special days of the year, but it is hard to deal with that letdown feeling that comes either that day or a day or two later. It seems that all the rush, and gift giving can become too overwhelming, and you just end up feeling tired and stressed. There are a few ways to combat that, and they all deal with gratitude. The first thing you may want to do is take a few minutes to write in your journal about all the things that you are grateful for. Look beyond the gifts that … Continue reading

While we each take time to express gratitude on Thanksgiving this is an important thing to continue to do throughout the year. This may help your children cope with the many pressures of commercialism that your children deal with on a regular basis. Here are five ideas for extending gratitude through the holidays. 1) You can have a gratitude jar. Each day each family member will write down what they were grateful for that day. On Christmas Eve you may … Continue reading

A Beautiful Family Home Evening

We do Family Home Evening whenever our schedule allows us. We most often do it on my husband’s day off, and with his work shift changing periodically, sometimes we’ll meet together on Sunday, or Tuesday, or Friday – just whenever we can work it in peacefully. We had our Family Home Evening this afternoon, strangely enough, and we found it one of the sweetest we’ve ever had. I’d like to share the highlights with you, if I may. My daughter is working on her Faith in God award and one of the suggested goals is to give a Family Home … Continue reading

General Conference: “Gratitude: A Path to Happiness”

In her talk “Gratitude: A Path to Happiness” Sister Bonnie D Parkin speaks of the importance of gratitude. Sister Parkin emphasizes that without gratitude it is difficult to feel the spirit. It is important to acknowledge the Lord’s hand in your life. Sister Parkin also mentions the blessings of the Relief Society. Sister Parkin shares a story about the blessing basket. Every evening her family would discuss the blessings of the day and add them to their “blessing basket.” This helped them to find things to be grateful for. It also helped her family feel how much Heavenly Father loved … Continue reading

Incorporate Gospel Teaching Into Your Family’s Daily Life

One of the best things that we can do for our families is to have a gospel centered home. It is important to create opportunities to teach your children the gospel. You should also be ready to discuss any problems or questions that your children may have. It helps them to hear a gospel perspective on the problem. One easy way to create opportunities to teach your children the gospel is to have a theme that you focus on for the month. Family Home Evening: Thanksgiving

For family home evening this week you may want to review the events leading up to the first Thanksgiving. This story talks about religious persecution, and the hopes that many who came to our country had. The lesson can then lead into things that each of you are grateful for. It is nice to have a reminder of all that we have at the beginning of the Holiday season. You can open the lesson by reading 1 Nephi 13:11-19.
