Family Home Evening: Five Ideas for Activities

When it comes to family home evening, it is often so easy to just focus on the spiritual message that is going to be taught. However, it is important to remember that another purpose of family home evening is to bring the family closer together. By having a fun relaxing activity after the spiritual part of the lesson you can help to build family unity. Here are five activities that you may consider doing as part of your family home evening.

1) A fun idea would be to have a family movie night. You can watch your old home movies. It would be fun to watch some that are of the parents when they were children. Go all out with this night: pop popcorn, have drinks, and set up a pretend movie theater.

2) Another fun idea is to have a talent show night. You should give your family plenty of warning so that each family member can prepare an act (or two depending on family size). These talents could range from serious to silly. It is a great way to learn a little bit more about each other and show each other support.

3) Another fun idea is to have a story telling night. You can share stories from your childhood as well as your family history. If you are sharing from your family history, bringing a photo or something that belonged to the person can help to bring the stories alive. As your children grow older, they can join in and share favorite family memories.

4) You can also spend time playing games together. If the weather is nice, play outdoor games, like kickball and football. If it is too cold to go outside you can play card games or board games as a family. Play games that encourage talking and sharing instead of outright competition (such as Risk).

5) A great way to spend time together is to spend time serving another family. You may decide to prepare a meal as a family or bake cookies for your neighbors. Or you could spend some time helping around the house or in the yard of an elderly couple. This will help your children learn the value of service.
