For the Strength of Youth Series: Family

The opening statement in the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet on Family states that “being part of a family is a great blessing.” Some of the benefits listed for being part of a family include companionship and happiness, a loving atmosphere, and a place of preparation for eternal life. Family is one of my most amazing blessings in life. I am amazed at how much I have learned and continue to learn from my family. I have four sisters and two brothers along with fabulous parents who have all taught me valuable lessons throughout the years. And they’ve become … Continue reading

Homeschool Word of the Day: Flexibility

To be flexible adaptable, bendable, versatile, and yeilding. In homeschooling, flexibility is being able to loosen yourself from the confines of what is traditionally school and doing things to your own lifestyle and schedule. So often, new homeschoolers find themselves confined to doing things in the same way that they would have if they were in a school. In addition, most homeschoolers, old and new alike still hold a schedule that exactly mirrors that of a public school. In doing it they impose a certain rigidity upon their schedule and often suck the fun out of their own lives. It … Continue reading

Ideas for Homeschool Graduations

As another school year comes to a close, another group of homeschoolers and their parents draw the homeschooling experience to an end. It is time for homeschool graduation ceremonies. Many homeschoolers prefer to graduate in groups of 10-20 in joint ceremonies with other homeschoolers they have socialized with over the years. Students who participated in Co-ops and other homeschool programs together like to graduate together. Others like to go solo and graduate as an individual. Here are some homeschool graduation ideas for homeschoolers who want to “graduate” individually. Have an Un-Graduation Ceremony: If your homeschoolers were actually unschoolers, living and … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Peer Pressure

This week the family home evening lesson discusses the importance of choosing good friends. The lesson will also discuss the influence that your friends can have on you. This is a great topic to discuss with your children as they prepare to start school again. Remember as you teach this lesson to do so with the spirit. You can open your lesson by sharing the account of Alma the Younger and the sons of King Mosiah in Mosiah 27. After you share the story you can ask your children if these friends were good influences or bad influences? You may … Continue reading

Homeschooling in the Winter, as God intended

An article I just read entitled “Too Cold for School” got me thinking. The author complained that while it was “too cold for school” and schools were closed due to pressure from parents; it was apparently not too cold for the mall or the movies. The author felt that by demanding the closing the schools the parents sent their kids a message that said it is ok to make excuses for not doing what you need to do. As recent as hundred and fifty years ago, children worked on farms with their parents in the spring and summer. When it … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Goals

The new year is a great time to have a family home evening based on goals. It is important to teach your children how to set and achieve goals. It teaches how to progress and to achieve their dreams. It can also bring a great sense of accomplishment to them. During this lesson you may want to have your children set goals in specific areas. You can share the goals you are setting. It is great if you can work out a way to support each other throughout the process. You can open the lesson by sharing 2 Nephi 28:30. … Continue reading

The Sunday Evening Review: November 18th

I’ve decided to rename our ‘Week in Review’ in the homeschooling blog. I always review the weeks on Sunday evenings and well, I just like the name better. So although it’s the same blog where you can look up the week’s worth of homeschooling blogs, it has a new name! We are steadily working on our list of things that your child should know. I want to make mention again that these lists are compiled from a few “expert lists”, including (but not limited to) the World Book Typical Course of Study. This week we covered What Your First Grader … Continue reading
