Making Difficult Decisions Through Prayer

Recently, I was faced with a difficult decision to make. Without going into too much detail, it was very personal, and involved one of my children. I needed the help of the Lord to make this decision. There were lots of emotions involved, and I kept questioning my feelings. It seemed hard to distinguish whether or not I was receiving revelation or just simple thoughts in my mind. I struggled with this issue for a few months. It wasn’t until I had a fleeting thought, and pondered on it that I realized that the Spirit was trying to whisper something … Continue reading

Give Your Teen Opportunities to Make Their Own Decisions

Growing up I really had very little opportunity to make my own decisions. Even when I was 18 years old and living at home, very rarely could I make a decision that didn’t have to go past my parents. In fact, I remember wanting to drop a particular college course I was taking (and that I was paying for) but my parents wouldn’t let me. By 19 years of age I was on my own, tired of never being allowed the chance to make a grownup decision. I think I tucked that away somewhere inside of me as a lesson … Continue reading

Keeping Your Faith at College – Part 2

Last month I looked at keeping your faith at college. I’m going to make a few more suggestions in this area today. Don’t cut yourself off from opportunities. Just because you’ve always belonged to one denomination doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the right one for you. When our daughter went to university she, like a few others, I know found she was not fitting in to the Anglican Church she attended. She got lost in the sheer size of the congregation and found it hard to mix. After a while she opted out and went along to a Baptist church which … Continue reading

Overcoming by Faith

In Doctrine and Covenants Section 76, we read of the three degrees of glory and the types of people who will merit each degree. In speaking of those who attain the celestial, or highest glory, we read in part: Verse 53: And who overcome by faith, and are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, which the Father sheds forth upon all those who are just and true. The footnote on the word “overcome” reads self-mastery. Self-mastery has always been difficult for me. I have an addictive personality, so pretty much anything you introduce me to, I’ll be all over. … Continue reading

Articles of Faith Series: The Fifth Article

The fifth Article of Faith states: We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe that God has imparted to us the power of the Priesthood, which is the power to act in His name for the blessing of His children. This power is used to heal the sick, to give comfort and direction, and to impart authority to others within … Continue reading

General Conference: “Restoring Faith in Family”

In his talk “Restoring Faith in the Family” Elder Kenneth Johnson speaks about the important role that family plays in society. Elder Johnson emphasizes that the family is where you are taught the values and morals that you will have your entire life. Elder Johnson shares that his family was able to teach him the values he needed to have a strong character. He speaks of the example his father set of hard work and the importance of doing your best. He also shares the example of his mother who taught him about provident living and sacrifice through others. Elder … Continue reading

Faith Is a Decision

As I read the conference talk this week, one comment that Elder Neal A. Anderson made really stuck with me. He said, “Faith is not only a feeling; it is a decision.” Elder Anderson went on to talk about how you can choose to build up your faith through studying the gospel and making righteous decisions. As I have contemplated that faith is more than a feeling, I have come to realize that it is really true. You can say that you believe something, but if you truly believe it, you will act on it. I believe that faith grows … Continue reading

Faith of Our Fathers – Modern Day Pioneers

As the church grows throughout the world, more and more of its members lack the three hundred (or whatever it is) generation link to the plain crossing pioneers. They might wonder how pioneer day affects them. Of course, learning about the faith-building experiences of others can help us resolve to strengthen our testimonies and press forward with faith. But what can we modern day pioneers do? You see, I am one of those pioneers. As I’ve mentioned before, I am a convert, the first generation in my family. I was blessed not to have strong opposition from my parents when … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review for Jan 20-26

Good morning, if you noticed a curious lack of the marriage blog week in review, I have to plead guilty. I wrote most of it, but yesterday, my daughter had a birthday party and we went out together to attend. It was a roller skating party and for those of you who follow my fitness blog posts, you know that my daughter and I have been roller-skating a great deal frequently, well we enjoyed ourselves roller-skating, but I was whipped after an hour and half on the skates and my legs felt like spaghetti. I’ll talk more about that in … Continue reading

Coping with an Unfaithful Spouse

This is a difficult topic at the best of times. While the soap opera genre makes its bones on selling infidelity and dishonesty. No one likes to think it could happen to them. No one wants to imagine the scenario where it could or it did happen. More than one divorce can cite infidelity as the crisis point that the relationship never recovered from. Yet, a marriage may survive infidelity and a spouse may be able to cope when they have learned that their spouse was unfaithful. The very thought that your spouse has been unfaithful is enough to leave … Continue reading
