Encouraging Youth to Attend Weekly Activities

As your young men and young women enter high school and become involved in extra curricular activities and begin to work part-time jobs, it can become more difficult to find the time to attend the Wednesday night activities. It is important that you help your children to find a balance so that they can still have the time to attend these uplifting activities each week. Here are five suggestions, which might help.

1) You may want to limit the number of extracurricular activities that your teenager participates in. Teenagers often stretch themselves too thin, as they try to experience all that life has to offer. You and your teenager can decide how many activities they can handle while still balancing school, church, and family responsibilities.

2) Be supportive of your teenager knows that you care about them, and because of this you want them to make it to their Wednesday night activities, this will help them to attend. You should attend any activity that parents are invited to. You should also provide transportation to and from the church activities.

3) You may need to set up a family calendar or reminder system, so that your teenager does not forget about the activities. This can be easy to do, especially during a stressful week, such as finals.

4) Encourage your children to keep activity day free. This is not always possible, but you may have them request that day off from work every week, and insist that they come straight home from any extracurricular activities. They may need to plan to have their homework finished earlier in the day, so that they can go to the activities.

5) Set the example by attending your activities. This will show your teenagers how much you value the gospel, and that you put it first in your life. It will make a bigger impression on your children, than anything you can say.
