Sharing the Gospel Can Be Simple

I know that I have a few mormon friends who are worried about making friends with non-LDS people because they are afraid that they will have nothing in common with them. I find that to be not true in my own experience. However, when you branch out, and become friends with someone who is not mormon, you will most likely find yourself answering questions about your faith. That is simply because we are different, and we stand out. Hopefully, for the right reasons. The truth is, that as Elder Holland said recently, we can never check our religion at the … Continue reading

Your Typical American Mormon Family

So, I was watching the Today show this morning and there was a lot of focus on Mitt Romney and the Republican Convention. Big surprise there, I know. The story also included the subject of MItt Romney’s faith because apparently he is going to speak about it in his speech tomorrow night. So, once again, Mormonism is in the spotlight. But, one thing that surprised me was that they said that most people don’t know a lot about our faith. And, I thought, really? Sure, maybe you don’t know a lot about specific theology, like the fact that we do … Continue reading

What’s New at FamilySearch? – Week of July 5, 2012

FamilySearch is one of the most popular genealogy websites in existence. It uses volunteers to help with indexing, updates, and other tasks. This makes it possible for FamilySearch to allow genealogists to use the website, and access the many resources it holds, for free. Here is some of what is new at FamilySearch this week. FamilySearch has a really interesting blog post that talks about users that have disabilities. The blog describes how FamilySearch is thinking about how their changes and interfaces could affect users with particular disabilities. For example, they consider the ability of people who are colorblind when … Continue reading

Organizing Your Home Office

Do you have a home office? Whether you work from home or you have a spot where you take care of your bills and other paperwork, you can make this area easier to handle if it is organized. Last weekend I spent most of it putting together a new organizational system in my home office. I first went out and purchased the following: label maker, large box of file folders, notebooks and a binder. I first labeled all of my folders. I have a set labeled 1-31 (for the days of the month) and then another set labeled with the … Continue reading

Are Those Vital Records Playing Hard to Get? Try These Tips

If you do genealogy research, you know that vital records such as birth, death, and marriage records, are a very important source of information. Many of these records are kept by various state agencies, and the policies and procedures for obtaining them vary by state. Unfortunately, they can sometimes be hard to access given the amount of bureaucracy and red tape that is involved. The good news is that there are some alternative ways to get the information that you would get from vital records which are much easier to get your hands on. Do not let a snag in … Continue reading

Some Kids With Autism May Not Understand Christmas

In general, kids who have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) tend to have difficulty with social concepts. Many kids with an ASD can be extremely logical in their thought processes. Together, this can make it hard for them to understand the connections between Santa, Christ, and the Christmas traditions that most families participate in. Every year, there are a lot of little kids who are excited by the prospect of Santa coming to their house on Christmas Eve. Parents tell their children about Santa, and the youngest kids believe with all their hearts that Santa is real. When they get … Continue reading

The Best and the Worst of the Halloween Candy

Have you been sneaking the kids Halloween candy? I know I have, especially after our church’s Trunk or Treat event got cancelled because of snow…yes snow, in October, in Pennsylvania. So here we are with a big bowl of candy and no way to hand it out (our semi-rural neighborhood, with its zero sidewalks and houses far apart get zero trick or treaters), meaning that there have been one or two (or five) Romans grabbing a piece or two here or there. We only buy the good stuff. I was curious to know which of the candy, the Kit Kats, … Continue reading

Laboring on Labor Day

So did you get to enjoy having off on Labor Day? Not me…I was laboring. In fact, I was squeezing in two days worth of work so my schedule could be cleared for Tuesday. My husband and I spent the day together in celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary. But I was okay with laboring on Labor Day. My husband had to work anyway, so it wasn’t that big of a deal. I can always arrange to have a day off during the week by doing that day’s work over the weekend, instead. But I really like to try and … Continue reading
