Daughters in My Kingdom

In church a couple of Sundays ago, I was handed a book by the Relief Society President titled, Daughters in my Kingdom. Seeing as I’m in Primary, I didn’t know what this book was all about. I asked her, and she said it was a gift from the church all about Relief Society. I threw it into my church bag, and didn’t give it much thought, until I pulled it out later and started thumbing threw it. I read the message from the first presidency on the inside. We are urged to, “study this book and allow its timeless truths … Continue reading

Serving Others Despite A Busy Life

I have been thinking a lot lately about serving others. At this stage in my life, it feels impossible to reach outside the needs of my own little family that demands so much, to others that might be in need. However, I believe that the Lord expects so much more of each of us. In the book, Daughters in My Kingdom, there is a quote by George Albert Smith that states, “Our eternal happiness will be in proportion to the way that we devote ourselves to helping others.” When you really think about that statement, it is hard not to … Continue reading

Setting Spiritual Goals for 2013

I’m not usually one to set New Year’s resolutions. I don’t ever do it. It’s not that I don’t have goals or aspirations, but I just don’t feel the need to do that at the beginning of each new year. However, this year, I have been thinking a lot about spiritual resolutions and goals. We all make them don’t we? We all say, “I’m going to pray more.” Or, “I am going to read my scriptures everyday”, etc. If you are anything like me, you feel like there is always something you can do better when it comes to your … Continue reading

Is Having Children Narcissistic?

For me, I always knew that I would one day have a family. I have been extremely blessed to be the mother to two, almost three children. I sometimes look at them and marvel at the fact that I am the mother of these little beings that walk and talk, and have very different personalities. As a psychology major, I often think about family dynamics. I think about my own family and how I was raised, and I also think about my children and how they are being raised. I am also fascinated by birth order, and how that affects … Continue reading

Caring for a Co-Parent

It’s one thing to care for a child day in and day out, but imagine enduring a tragic turn of events that requires that you also tend to the needs of a dying spouse. For Carole Falconbridge, honoring her wedding vows, to have and to hold in sickness and in health to death do her part, from her beloved husband Dean, became even more challenging when the man she adored was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. But that was only half of her daily heart break. According to the 33-year-old wife and mother, the task that crippled her with … Continue reading

Dangers of Complacency

Are you comfortable in your life? Have you reached a point where things seem to be going along well, where you think you’ve done enough and can afford to slack off a little? This passage in Isaiah 32 highlights the dangers of complacency. What a blessing righteous and just government is, verse 1. It brings peace and security verse 2. Ultimately, this will only come about when Jesus reigns. His kingdom will be one of perfect righteousness. Those who have been blind will see the truth clearly. Those who hear will actually listen, verse 3. They will discern the truth, … Continue reading

Disney “Dream” Jobs

A couple of days ago, I mentioned that the Career Builder contest that thousands of people entered their videos into presenting themselves in their personal dream roles as Disney Cast Members. The dream jobs these contest entries were competing for included Jungle Cruise skippers, pirates, Haunted Mansion Butlers and Maids; Princesses-in-Waiting and Disney Parks Parade Performers. What Are These Dream Jobs? Do you have a dream job at Disney? I always wanted to be one of the dancers that performed during the stage shoes, myself. But let’s talk a little bit about what each of these dream jobs actually involves … Continue reading

Barbie in The Twelve Dancing Princesses (2006)

In this, the most recent release in the Barbie movie series, our golden girl stars as Genevieve, the seventh of twelve daughters born to a loving king and queen. Unfortunately, the queen has passed away, leaving the king alone to raise the children, but he’s done fairly well on his own. Each girl has their own personality and their own talents, and their days are spent developing those talents. Each afternoon they gather together to dance, a tradition their mother began. She loved dancing and even had a pavilion built outside the castle for that purpose. The king begins to … Continue reading

The Errand of Angels is Given to Women

From the day I joined the church, I have been a huge fan of visiting teaching. My very first companion was a ‘hundred percenter’ (or fairly close); she took the time to sit down with me and discuss the responsibilities and need for visiting teachers, and it has been a lesson I never forgot (thanks, Jada!). I know that visiting teaching can be difficult, especially once you add children to the mix, but I strongly believe that it, along with home teaching, is a vital part of the church. As with children, I have wondered if the women I visit … Continue reading

The Affirming Value of a Child’s Teddy – Voices from Survivors of Sexual Abuse

Teddy bears have long been the comfort of children everywhere. In an effort to reclaim the comfort of my lounge room I have this morning been packing up hundreds of teddies left over from the 2006 Cairns Teddy Tour-A-Thon to donate to children’s charities. As the Teddies beady little eyes pleaded with me not to suffocate them with my large black plastic bags, my conscience did a real Megan act and stood up against the emotionally flat and repetitious packing actions of my hands. Determined to stay strong in my task, I shut my ears and heart to the silent … Continue reading
