Creating A Reverent Home

For the last part of creating a learning-centered home, we are going to discuss creating reverence. Reverence is not simply standing with ones arms folded and being quiet. President David O. McKay defined it as “profound respect mingled with love” (Conference Report, Apr 1967, 86). President Kimball admonished the Saints to be models of reverent behavior. As we are reverent through our daily lives, we will bring the Spirit with us; as our homes become more reverent, we will be able to instruct and uplift our families. As with most things in the parenting world, the best way to teach … Continue reading

Creating a Learning Atmosphere

When it comes to the spiritual atmosphere in our home, we can create one that is either conducive to learning, or not. Some of the responsibility for such an atmosphere lies on us as parents; some of it lies on our children. As parents, we have a more direct role than an ordinary teacher in controlling what habits our children learn. When we work to create a learning atmosphere, and take the time to raise our kids in it, then they will also take the steps necessary to maintain that atmosphere. How We Can Contribute to a Learning Atmosphere In … Continue reading

Creating A Learning-Centered Home

The primary responsibility for teaching our children lays not on the church and not on the schools but in our own homes. It is our role as parents to teach our children about the gospel and about our Savior. As I studied the section in the Teacher Development manual on creating a learning atmosphere, I saw a multitude of ways that we could apply these precepts not only in our wards and branches but in our homes. Because there were so many fantastic points, I’m going to break this down into a series over the remainder of the week. Today, … Continue reading

Where’s Your Family’s Focus?

The family is the central unit to the church. When you realize that, you should also realize that the family should have the focus of teaching your children about the gospel. The church has instructed us to have family home evening, family prayer and family scripture study to do these things. There are are all things that we can do to teach our children the gospel. There have been times when my family is really focused on the gospel and times when they are not so much. When we make the gospel and Christ the focus of the family everything … Continue reading

Priorities and the Gospel

A few weeks ago, Miriam wrote a great blog on ‘example families’ – those families in the ward who do a stellar job with family prayer, family scripture study, and so forth. As I read her entry, I started a comment that expressed how impressed I was with such families, and then basically said, “As a mom of four young kids, I often wonder just how these families do it.” I never even submitted that comment because, as I thought about it, I realized that I do, in fact, know how they accomplish this task. It’s all about priorities. These … Continue reading

Incorporate Gospel Teaching Into Your Family’s Daily Life

One of the best things that we can do for our families is to have a gospel centered home. It is important to create opportunities to teach your children the gospel. You should also be ready to discuss any problems or questions that your children may have. It helps them to hear a gospel perspective on the problem. One easy way to create opportunities to teach your children the gospel is to have a theme that you focus on for the month. You can choose your theme by choosing basic topics or you may want to choose a specific conference … Continue reading

The LDS Families Week in Review: January 28th – February 3rd

Sunday School The Sunday school lesson for this week centered around John 3-4. We examined various parts of the lesson throughout the week. In Spiritually Reborn, we looked at the need to not only be baptized but to be ‘born again’ of the spirit. In Because of the Simpleness of the Way, we talked about the relative simplicity of casting our eyes – and our whole beings – on Christ, and following the paths He walked. In A Well of Living Water, we talked about Christ’s meeting with the Samaritan woman at the well, and how we, too, can draw … Continue reading
