Our Children Are Watching Our Choices

What do we teach our children when we watch television together? What do we teach our children when we eat dinner together? What do we teach our children with the types of food we choose to have in our house or by the way we spend our free time? It is important to realize that our children scrutinize our every action. They notice what we eat, what we drink, when we exercise and what we value the most. They know how we spend our time and whether or not we study the scriptures on a regular basis. They know the … Continue reading

The Proclamation on the Family — David J. Ridges

My husband and I were married on August 31, 1995, in the Salt Lake temple. Both of us came from broken homes and we wanted to make our marriage a success, but we didn’t have personal examples to follow and we felt like we were flying a bit blind. Less than one month later, in September of 1995, the First Presidency issued “A Proclamation to the World on the Family,” and we felt as though we’d been given a personal map to correctly chart our course. “The Proclamation” as given to us by the First Presidency takes all the beliefs, … Continue reading

As parents and as members of the church, it is important that we model proper self-image when it comes to our bodies. It is too easy to become caught up in the pursuit of a perfect body. Are There Unresolved Problems?

I suppose it is pretty well known that it is not so much the problems and issues we know we need to work on that give us fits, it is the ones that we have nor or are not facing. The Word of Wisdom and Your Example to Your Children

When we think about our children and the responsibilities that we have as parents we often focus on how they are doing spiritually, socially and academically. We want our children to be healthy, but often do not stop to think about the habits that we are teaching our children when they are young. The Family: A Proclamation to the World states: “Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. ‘Children are an heritage of the Lord’ (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and … Continue reading

The Word of Wisdom Teaches Moderation

We are counseled to care for our bodies. The “For the Strength of Youth” pamphlet has an entire section devoted to proper eating and exercise. Our bodies are blessings, and it is important that we take care of them. Unfortunately many people have a hard time doing this. They may have a hard time (for a variety of reasons including medical and genetic) losing weight or staying in shape. In desperation many people begin to turn to fad diets as a solution. The Word of Wisdom is wonderful because it counsels us to have moderation in all things. If we … Continue reading

Treating Our Bodies as Temples

In the church we look on the body as a temple. It is important that we take care of our bodies and that we do not desecrate them. We are counseled to avoid tattoos (if you had one before you joined the church, it is a different story), only pierce our ears once, and to keep our appearance neat and comely. This is important since we are all representatives of the church. Since we are supposed to make sure that our appearances our clean and appropriate, is it not just as important to take care of our bodies so that … Continue reading
