BYU Football - Spring Ball

Okay, this is going to be a short one. My last two blogs have been a little bit lengthy.

I know BYU football isn't a category here -- but hey, is there anything more intrinsic with the LDS family than BYU sports?

Today, my husband and I are going to check out the scrimmage that ends BYU's Spring Football just before the Blue and White game takes place on Saturday. Why? Because we love BYU football. We're excited for the year to come and the changes which took place in the coaching staff last year. We have a dear friend now on that coaching staff - we'll leave it to you to figure out who - and find it an added pleasure that we can support him as well as enjoy ourselves.

So what is it about the satisfying smack of pads, the grunts and yells, the slap of the football into the waiting quarterback's hands that gets me excited? I don't know - it's just too much fun. I'm a BYU Cougar from way back. Before that, I was a Ricks College Viking (Go pizza bombs!) and was into basketball. But when I came to BYU, it was football all the way. My first year was 1983 and Steve Young (who led the nation in passing accuracy and was No. 2 on the Heisman ballot that year) was at the helm of the Cougars. That was a great year with only one loss at the beginning of the season. Following was that legendary year that garnered the Cougars a national championship - Robbie Bosco captained the ship at that time. On and on, Ty Detmer (the memorable upset of the NCAA's No. 1 Miami Hurricanes in 1990 and a Heisman winner), John Walsh (okay, he wasn't my favorite), Steve Sarkisian (led the Cougars to their 14 and 1 record and a Cotton Bowl win), Brandon Doman (now BYU's quarterback coach) - these are the names I remember. I love football and now I'm getting all excited about the fall season and it's only March! Go Cougars!

I see that BYU has to open it's football season in Tucson vs. The University of Arizona. That's going to be ugly, BYU players being carted off the field one after another due to Stoops' brusing defense. Should be fun. Cats 42 - BYU 3

Now, now Bluetree, no need to get Cougar Nation all wound up.

Hey, hey, hey -- let's not pull the gloves off just yet. Come bluetree, Carson knows where it's at -- I'm afraid you just riled the Cougar Nation! Go Cougars! AZ 3 - BYU 56.

How is BYU going to score? LOL.

I was also at BYU during the championship year -- what a blast. (And the big UW game the next fall. Thanks goodness BYU pulled it off or I could never have gone home to Washington, land of the rabid Husky fans!) The energy of the games was amazing and I loved being part of the roaring crowd. Sometimes we cheered in the blazing heat, sporting lopsided facial tans for days after, and other times the chattering of our teeth in the cold, mountain air rivaled our enthusiastic shouts. However you experienced it, it was fun.

Oh I saw those boys play yesterday - they'll score and score at will. Arizona better watch out!

Anyway - it was a blast yesterday, mingling with all the legends, the literal history of BYU football. It was great. We felt a connection to the program we hadn't felt in a long time.

Who's the starting QB for BYU this year?

Candace Salima (1604) 03 Apr 2006 04:27 AM

I don't know. I saw John Beck, he was looking pretty good. Jason Beck was also throwing -- I'll have to go check the roster they gave us. But they looked good. I would assume John will be the QB again, but I could be wrong. I didn't ask they'd made a decision yet.

I think Bronco's done a nice job bringing the love back to BYU football, but I don't think he's going to be prepared for the heat Stoops is going to bring on D.

We'll have to see how it all plays out. I don't think he'll be able to remain the defensive coordinator AND the head coach for much longer. Eventually he's going to have to give up the defensive end. But BYU has gone back to the old Cougar style of defense -- I think we're going to see great progress on the defensive end of the field now.

Ah, we'll still beat 'em. Great article though -- no, I am not delusional! Ha, ha.
