Are You Out of Balance?

Sometimes there are too many options and choices available and they all have merit and worth. At times it can be difficult to find the proper balance in your life and in the life of your family. There are many choices that are good, and other choices that are better. Personally I often struggle with my priorities and the way that I choose to spend my time.

When I feel overwhelmed, stuck or unable to focus then I know that something is out of balance and it is time assess and change things in my life. Filling my time with meaningless activities, taking too much time for myself or not enough time for myself, and neglecting scripture study both personal and family can make a big difference in my day and in the way that I feel.

When I have those time in my lives I go back and look at my long-term goals and see if what I'm doing falls in line with them. Of course it helps to have the eternal perspective in mind the entire time as well, and so I pray carefully about whether or not I need to focus on each goal at this time. To use an example from church programs, I don't feel that now is the time for me to be focused on family history. I can do that when my children are older. Right now the focus should be on them.

As I pray about the decision and look at how much time I am spending in various areas of my life, I'm amazed at how quickly I can find areas to cut back on. It is also comforting to know that the Lord is watching out for me. As I pray for guidance and help I find that I can get more accomplished or find ways around the problems that are throwing me out of balance, but sometimes the answer is to stop doing certain things. In General Conference several years ago Elder Dallin H Oaks spoke about this topic in "Good, Better and Best."
