An Argument for Evolutionby Tristi Pinkston | More from this Blogger 12 Dec 2006 09:40 AM Yes, I see you doing a double take. Wasn't it Tristi who just yesterday posted a blog about how she doesn't believe in evolution, and how she firmly believes in the creation? Indeed, you are very observant. That was me. However, I do not speak of evolution in the "we came from monkeys" sense of the word. I absolutely do not believe we came from monkeys, despite the myriad evidences I see around me every day, exhibited by persons who act like monkeys. I believe we came directly from our Heavenly Father, and that monkeys didn't enter the equation at all. The evolution of which I speak is the progress that we have made as a species since the world was created. Think of all we have learned. Think of the technology we have been given, all the way from the cotton mill and printing press through the telephone and the Internet and rocket ships and brain surgery and all the things that are being invented even as we speak. We went from walking to carts and wagons to horse-pulled buggies to cars to SUVs (and we all got fatter, too, but that's a story for another day.) We have evolved as a people. Interestingly enough, people are also taller than they used to be. Back in Joseph Smith's time, the average height for a man was around 5'10'', but now it's over 6'. Think of all the blessings that have come our way, and relate them to the ways in which they are used to build up the Lord's kingdom. With airplanes came the ability to send missionaries all over the world. With computers came the ability to keep track of millions of names for genealogy and temple work. We can also e-mail our missionaries instead of writing them. We can use our cars to drive to the temple. We can print off thousands of copies of the Scriptures to be handed out en masse. We have truly evolved as a people, and I believe that the Lord has guided these mighty steps in progression, not only for our enjoyment and benefit, but for the building up of His kingdom. I for one am sure glad we aren't still sitting on rocks, cooking dinner over fires, and only having a portion of His word. On a side note, one of the prophets of this dispensation (I don't remember who) gave the church's official position on evolution. We believe in evolution, but not that man came from monkeys. Seems like you hit the nail on the head. I am a techno-geek, and I am so grateful to be alive in an age when I can download Conference from the church website and be able to either burn a CD or listen to it on my MP3 player. In fact, I'm loving the ability to Tivo conference via satellite at home and watch it for months. Just looking at the past 150 years and how much easier it is for the saints around the world to access the scriptures and the teachings of the church amazes me.
