Accepting Ourselves

About a year ago one of my sisters came to visit me. She kept asking my daughter if she was fat. My sister said she asked her because she knew that children were always honest. When my sister was about to leave my daughter turned to me and said, "Mommy, I'm too fat." I think that my daughter taught my sister and me something very important that day. She didn't care what my sister looked like, but because my sister was so conscious of it, my daughter began to pay attention to it.

Children understand what truly matters. Little children might tell you that you are fat or something else uncomplimentary, but they still love you. It doesn't matter to them the way that you look, rather what matters is the way that you act and treat them. Do we look on ourselves, and love the person that we are or do we become too wrapped up in the things that we are not? Hopefully we don't dwell on the negative things, but can see positive things in our lives as well.

Heavenly Father looks on us and sees not our outward appearance, but He sees our souls. Doctrine and Covenants 18:10 says, "Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God." I know that I automatically think about not judging others, and making sure that I take the time to help those around me. But do I take the time to apply to myself? I think that we are often too hard on ourselves.

Each and every one of us is a child of God. He loves us, and watches out for us. He also wants us to be happy. Make sure that you value yourself, the way that He values you. You are of great worth to God. As you extend an effort in doing the right things, He will make up the difference.

We should also make every effort to build up and support those around us. Those with low self-esteems seldom make it known to others. Complimenting others helps both of you feel good. One of the best ways to build self-esteem is to serve others. As we lose the focus on ourselves, and turn the focus outward, we are able to find true happiness.
