Staging Your House for Less

Something about spring makes me start watching all of those home shows. You know the ones where couples and sometimes singles look for the perfect house, fix up and put their homes on the market or just do some renovations. Maybe it is because spring is the most popular time of the year to list a house and get a buyer. While the housing market has promise of turning around, there is still quite a lot of “stock,” houses on the market. This means that in order to make yours sell, it needs to shine. One thing that helps house … Continue reading

Becoming an Efficient Housekeeper

It’s not uncommon to struggle with everything that needs to be done in a home.  But there are ways that you can not only become a better housekeeper but a more efficient one. Personally, I really dislike wasting time.  Although I enjoy a clean, orderly home I prefer to get on with my day.  In other words, there are many other things I would rather do than spend too much time cleaning and organizing. So through the years I have learned a variety of ways to be more efficient. And it all starts the night before. I have a rule … Continue reading

Housework and Home Business

My colleague, Sara Berthiaume, recently wrote a post called, Keeping House While Working from Home. She touches on an issue that many work at home moms are faced with. How in the world can you keep your home clean while building a business from home? Keeping a home is a big job. Don’t be fooled by those who want you to believe if you keep a home and raise a family you are not doing enough. Believe me, you are doing plenty! Caring for a home and a family can be overwhelming so when you add to it a home … Continue reading

Safe Housekeeping During Pregnancy

When you are pregnant, you may find yourself suddenly motivated to clean more than you usually do. Of course, you may not, and that is also perfectly normal. I never experienced an overwhelming urge to clean house during either of my pregnancies, although I did clean a little more than normal during my second pregnancy. Cleaning during pregnancy is not harmful in and of itself. When the urge to clean strikes, be careful about what products you use to clean, and about some of the chores that you choose to tackle. If you have been bitten by the housekeeping bug, … Continue reading

Getting Your Home in Order After the Weekend

You can always tell that it is Monday at my house because of the visible chaos that is spread throughout the house, especially on the first floor. Toys, books, jackets, dishes, you name it, collects in odd places, as the family runs in and out of the house on various errands. Home projects, such as organizing a closet or de-cluttering books or toys don’t always get completed, since there is a yard sale or the farmer’s market or a softball game to go see instead. Sometimes when life gets in the way, it isn’t just the weekend that has caused … Continue reading

Saving Money on a New House

One of the easiest ways to save on a mortgage is by making a substantial down payment. The larger your down payment, the less you will have to pay on a monthly basis. In most cases, home buyers are required to cough up at least 20 percent of a home loan in order to avoid Private Mortgage Insurance. Whereas it would be wonderful if we could all put down 20 to 30 percent of our dream home’s total price, many potential buyers struggle to come up with even half that. Fortunately, for many first-time homebuyers, down payment assistance is available. … Continue reading

House of Representatives Votes to Repeal Part of the ACA

Today, March 23, 2012, is the official second anniversary of when the Affordable Care Act was signed by President Obama. Not everyone is celebrating, though. The House of Representatives voted this week to repeal a portion of the ACA. This week, the House of Representatives, which is Republican-led, voted to pass a bill to repeal a specific portion of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). They voted 223 – 181 to dismantle a 15-member panel that was designed to control costs of the Medicare program. This panel is called the Independent Payment Advisory Board IPAB. The Republicans like to call the … Continue reading

Housekeeping Then and Now

I was recently watching a show depicted in the times before we had electricity. It was interesting to think about how different housekeeping was back then. In order to get the most out of your day, you had to get up with the sun. That meant rising pretty early. And the work didn’t end until the sun went down. I was thinking about how even back then, women kept a schedule. They knew when their day would begin and when it would end. They scheduled their housekeeping according to the different seasons. But they also set aside certain tasks on … Continue reading
