The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints View of Family

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has its own view of what a family is. This is described in a proclamation to the world that was issued by the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles in 1995. Here is what it said: We, THE FIRST PRESIDENCY of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children. IN THE PREMORTAL REALM, spirit … Continue reading

Surrogacy in the LDS Church

I have close family members and friends that have struggled with infertility. Since I don’t struggle with these same issues, sometimes I feel like I have no right to comment about any of it. But, I know that this is an issue that affects many LDS families (and non-LDS families) around the world. I can only imagine that in a church like ours, whose focus is so much on the family, it can be especially hard to struggle with infertility. It is a righteous desire to want to have children. It is hard to understand why the Lord is not … Continue reading

A Hot Topic in the LDS Church

The subject of homosexuality and the gospel has been on my mind a lot lately, and on the mind of many Latter-Day Saints, I’m sure. I have had many discussions with friends inside and outside of the church about these issues. I know people that are gay. I live close to people that are gay, and there are people in our society that I truly admire that are gay. Recently, an active member of the church posted a blog post sharing his intimate story about how he is a homosexual living in a heterosexual marriage, and recently decided to share … Continue reading

The Church Introduces a New Nursery Manual

For the past several years, nursery leaders and Sunbeam leaders have been teaching from the same manual. This hasn’t been a bad thing – our curriculum, as always, is inspired and our children have greatly benefited from the lessons they are taught. This last month, however, the Church released a new manual designed specifically for the nursery. The manual is entitled “Behold Your Little Ones” and has thirty lessons that are geared specifically to nursery-aged children (eighteen months to three years). In addition to full-color photographs to go along with each topic, the lessons have a line drawing that can … Continue reading

Mormons and Politics

I have to admit that on this election day, I could hardly think of anything to write about that did not directly relate to politics. While the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints maintains political neutrality, politics are still a very hot topic among LDS members. And, I have to say that I have been ashamed by some of the comments I have seen by LDS members of the church opposing other parties. Politics and Religion are two things that do not go hand in hand very easily. However, I have felt that during this election year, I have … Continue reading

Father’s Day Reflections

I am so grateful for Father’s Day to celebrate both my own father and my husband. I have been so blessed to see good men in my life that set an example of how to be a good Dad, but also how to support a family no matter how hard it is. Father’s day didn’t turn out quite like we planned. I wanted to get up and make my hubby breakfast with the kids. But, instead, I was sick with a cold. I managed to occupy the kids with a craft for their Dad, though and give him a little … Continue reading

Changes to the FamilySearch Website

If you use the FamilySearch web site for your genealogy research, you may have noticed that the web site has undergone a few changes lately. The changes are intended to enhance the experience of FamilySearch users by combining what had previously been a group of sites and products into one great big free genealogy resource website. The records and indexes from the old site are a part of the new site, along with an improved method for searching them. Additional records are continually being added to the site, too. Genealogists can use FamilySearch for far more than records, just as … Continue reading

Too Agreeable in a Marriage?

Can you be too agreeable in a marriage? I’m inclined to think you can and it sets up a recipe for boredom. Yes, it’s great to be in sync with your spouse and agree on most things or even some things. It’s especially important to be in agreement on the major issues, like raising children, discipline, core values, beliefs, family issues, finances, etc. It makes for a harmonious marriage. So does having common interests. But it’s not helpful to agree on every opinion and every interest. The person, who never has an opinion or makes a decision of their own, … Continue reading
