SeaWorld Trainer Killed by Killer Whale

Many people see animal compassion as a big part of green living. Some chose to be vegetarians, some choose to not wear products made from animals, and some fight for animal rights, which can include cracking down on animal brutality, animal testing, and the captivity of wild animals. Yesterday, a SeaWorld trainer was killed by a killer whale named Tillikum in Orlando, Fla. It is not known how the trainer ended up in the tank. Some say she was pulled in by the whale and some say she fell in in what appears to be an accident. What is known … Continue reading

Why am I Writing this Weight Loss Blog?

I have never found an online forum on weight loss where the moderator/writer was someone who had been obese and made it to “the other side”. Who better to talk with people who want to lose weight than someone who has felt their pain and been through everything that they are going through? I am passionate about this topic because I live it! At my heaviest, I weighed 265. I’m not proud of that, but I don’t mind saying it because I know that there are other people out there who have gone over that 200-pound mark and they may … Continue reading

Adoptive Parents Need Compassion

A good friend died a few years ago. He was the most compassionate man that I have ever known. He was a staff pastor at the church that our family attended for fifteen years. Early on, I recognized that he was someone special and asked him if I could tag along when he was ministering to people. We met about twenty years ago. I was struggling with the things that God was doing with my life. I was feeling a lot of compassion for people, but I was also mad at some folks and downright difficult with others. My friend … Continue reading

World of Warcraft – Do You Know What PvP is?

World of Warcraft is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game that transports the players into a gaming world where they can interact with other players, take on quests and enjoy skill crafting, problem solving and more. My nephew, now 7, loves to play this game. Initially, his father introduced him to it in order to encourage reading. My nephew loves video games and he could read, but he often resisted doing it. His father thought that the game would be a great way to get him to read because the interface requires reading skill in order to accept and understand … Continue reading

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints View of Family

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has its own view of what a family is. This is described in a proclamation to the world that was issued by the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles in 1995. Here is what it said: We, THE FIRST PRESIDENCY of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children. IN THE PREMORTAL REALM, spirit … Continue reading

In Memoriam 2012 – Part 1

It’s that time of the year again – to reflect on those we have lost.  Some deaths might have been expected, but many came as a shock to us.  Either way, all will be missed. January 2012 1 – Etta James – Leukemia (73) James had a beautiful voice and was lucky enough to see it appreciated by a whole new generation when songs such as “At Last” became popular again in the 2000’s.  James won six Grammys and 17 Blues Music Awards.  Her music crossed genres as she was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame … Continue reading

FHE with Small Children-Strengthening our Family

I love when simple family home evenings make the best ones. That is my goal by sharing this FHE with Small Children series as often as possible. This past Monday night, we had a family home evening where my kids really listened, the lesson was short, and everyone got to participate. We started out talking about our own family. I asked my kids the following questions: Who is in our family? Do you think we have a happy family? Do we want to make our family stronger? I then told them about The Family: A Proclamation to the World. Since … Continue reading

Say Yes To The Mess

Today I realized that while Dylan has had a few forays into the wonderful world of art, he has probably not had nearly enough opportunities to express himself creatively. Why? Well, to put it simply, I am terrified of the possible mess and destruction that could result. Before you label me a terrible parent who deprives her toddler of any creative outlet for fear that he might make a mess, let me explain. When Dylan uses crayons or colored pencils he makes wonderful creations on paper. For about five minutes. Then he wants to take the crayons or colored pencils … Continue reading

Business Profile: Avodah Coffee Avodah Coffee is owned by Jordan Heights, married to Jessica Heights from the blog Muthering Heights and Other Senseless Sensibility. From clearing the fog out of our heads to chatting with friends coffee is a welcome companion. Avodah Coffee is a success because they simply … Continue reading

Opportunities To Serve

I recently wrote about children needing to learn to respect their elders. We need to take advantage of all teachable moments. As a single mother there may already be so much on your to do list that one more thing will push you over the edge but we are their first teacher and need to be aware of it. Our children will learn by what they see us do. If we are rude to salespeople, waitresses or telemarketers we are telling our children it’s ok to be rude to other people. It’s hard after working all day, coming home to … Continue reading
